Anti-Virus Software:

This is the first thing you should install. We recommend and personally use AVG Anti-Virus. Grisoft offers both free and "pay-for" versions.

Anti-Spyware Software:

Your second install! We recommend and personally use Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware. Spybot-S&D is free but accepts donations. Lavasoft offers both free and "pay-for" versions. We install both because what one doesn't catch, the other does.

PDF Software:

Almost everyone needs to open a PDF eventually so you might as well save yourself the time later and download and install Adobe Reader now.

Optional Add-ons:

We don't consider the following to be critical installs but most of the time you end up needing them anyway while browsing around so you may want to install them now instead of having to wait on an install when you are waiting for a site to load.

More:

There are tons of other add-ons that you might consider a priority depending on your browsing habits. Obviously this list doesn't include everything imaginable. But, we think it's a good start.
